Adopt-A-Family: Help Brighten the Holidays for Okanagan Families
As the snow begins to fall and festive lights start to glow across the valley, many Okanagan families are preparing for a joyful holiday season. But for some, this time of year brings more stress than celebration — and that’s where the community’s kindness shines brightest. BGC Okanagan has officially launched its 2025 Adopt-A-Family campaign, inviting individuals, workplaces, and community groups to help local children, youth, and families experience the warmth and joy of the holidays through monetary donations, gift cards, or sponsoring a family.
An Okanagan Tradition of Caring
For nearly two decades, Adopt-A-Family Okanagan has connected generous donors and sponsors with families who could use a helping hand during the holidays. Through hampers filled with food and gifts — or donations that empower families to shop for what they need most — the program brings dignity, hope, and togetherness to homes across the region.
“Every year, we see the difference this campaign makes — not just in gifts or food, but in restoring a sense of belonging and relief for families who are struggling,” said Stephanie Ponting, BGC Okanagan Fund Development & Community Events Coordinator. “The support we receive truly helps families experience the holidays the way they should be: together, and without the stress of choosing between bills and a holiday meal.
Rising Costs and Growing Food Insecurity
This year, the need for support is greater than ever. According to the Canadian Income Survey, one in four Canadians experiences some level of food insecurity — from worrying about running out of food to going full days without eating.
With rising costs continuing to affect families across the Okanagan, BGC Okanagan expects the number of families seeking help to remain high this holiday season.
“The reality is that food insecurity is now touching families who never imagined needing help,” said Jeremy Welder, CEO and President of BGC Okanagan. “When people donate to Adopt-A-Family, they’re not just giving gifts — they’re giving families dignity and hope. They’re helping parents put food on the table and making sure kids experience the joy of the season. That’s what community is all about.”
Adopt-A-Family Delivered to Okanagan Homes
Each December, BGC Okanagan staff and volunteers load their cars with hampers and gift cards, heading out to deliver hope to Club families across the valley. These moments — often filled with tears, laughter, and gratitude — remind everyone involved why the campaign matters.
“One mother shared that she had been stressed about not being able to get her children presents. When the hamper arrived, her kids were surprised and overjoyed — they hadn’t expected gifts that year,” shared a BGC Okanagan staff member. “It’s always such an honour to deliver these hampers. Last year, one youth couldn’t believe the boxes we carried in were all filled with real presents. The thought and care from our sponsors truly bring the spirit of the holidays to life.”
In 2024, more than 150 Okanagan families received hampers and e-cards through the campaign. This year, the organization hopes to match or exceed that number — ensuring every family can enjoy a warm meal and a moment of joy during the holidays.
